Sixty jobs in danger as Lancashire brewer plans to relocate

Lancashire brewing company Daniel Thwaites has revealed plans to carry out a company wide restructuring process as it plans to relocate to a new site in Blackburn, a brand new report in the local business media has revealed.

The company, which employs a total of 350 staff in its brewery, distribution operations, sales force and head office, first announced plans to restructure its brewing operations in the town in 2011, as part of a plan to relocate to a modern out of town premises.

However, despite being committed to moving to a new modern brewery, it has decided to close parts of its old brewery and outsource some of its brewing activities and for this reason, it started a consultation period has now started with 60 staff affected by the restructure.

Thwaites’ chief executive Rick Bailey said: "We have been clear about our plans for the brewery for over two years now and have been working to reinvest in a new brewery, alongside finding a solution to the redevelopment of our current site.

"We always said that we thought this move would take us three to four years and the time has now come for us to move on. Our current brewery is old, oversized for our current needs and reaching a point of obsolescence; it is inefficient for the demands of today’s market and is reaching the end of its economic life.

"We are therefore proposing a further restructuring of our brewing operations, the next stage in seeing through our commitment to reinvesting in a new brewery locally, that is more efficient and more suitable for the future."
