Factory workers from Spennymoor in County Durham and Barrow and Cleator Moor in Cumbria were among those taking part in a rally over job losses. The demonstration concerned workers whose jobs are under threat from plans to close factories employing disabled people. Among the 36 Remploy factories due to close are more north-western locations, including: Birkenhead, Bolton, Manchester, Oldham and Wigan. An £8 million fund is being set up to help those affected find other employment.
