£1bn blueprint to transform Bolton town centre approved

A very ambitious plan that could potentially transform Bolton town centre, create 7,400 jobs and lead to the construction of 1,800 homes has been formally approved, a news report in the local business media has been able to suggest.

The £1bn masterplan, which comprises proposals to shape Bolton until 2030, was unveiled earlier this month and the framework was adopted by the council at a cabinet meeting yesterday (25 September 2017).

Bolton Council announced initial details of its blueprint in July 2017 and the authority has since approved the borrowing of £100m to kick-start the project. The remainder of the plan will be funded by private-sector investors.

The cash will be used for site assembly, preparing site for development, public realm and infrastructure.

Some of the main plans included in the strategy include office and residential scheme Trinity Quarter, Cheadle Square, a residential development on the former bus station site, and the creation of Crompton Place, a food court overlooking Victoria Square located in an empty BHS store.

It is hoped that work on the first phase – which includes the clearance of land in the Trinity Gateway and Church Wharf areas – could start in spring 2018.
