Work starts on £650m regeneration scheme for residential area in Salford

Work has started on a major government-backed project that will see the Pendleton area of Salford undergo a series of major improvement works, a news report in the media has revealed.

The project, worth an estimate £650m, is a public-private partnership led by a consortium called Pendleton Together, comprising social landlord Together Housing Group and building and regeneration specialist Keepmoat in partnership with Salford City Council. As a part of it, more than 1,600 new houses are to be built and more than 1,250 existing council-owned properties are set to undergo extensive improvement work.

Salford City Council said the scheme was set to generate 500 jobs, create 24 new small- and medium-sized businesses, provide training for 3,200 local people and 2,000 work experience opportunities.

Salford mayor Ian Stewart said: "It’s a tremendous relief that all our behind-the-scenes work to persuade the government to give the go-ahead, has finally paid off. A lot of work has been done in recent years to regenerate the local area and provide new opportunities for local people. This scheme will help transform Pendleton, its homes and environment."
